Compelling Historical Fiction When You’re on the Edge

I had low expectations when DotE and I started The Crown: I figured it would be an overly dramatic, soap opera-y depiction of the British Royal Family. That was unfair. The Crown is nuanced, and – as an added plus – filled with strong acting and beautiful photography. While the British Royalty is not the most important topic in my mind, it’s quite interesting to learn about modern British history (think WW2, Winston Churchill) while reveling in the drama of this group of folks, none of whom seem to want the power that I had conceived to be the ultimate reward. We are only on season one, but The Crown is, thus far, definitely worth a watch.
