About

Family on the Edge is our response to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. Like families everywhere, we are figuring out the new normal – learning to shelter in place, attend virtual school, attempt do-it-yourself haircuts and appreciate every sheet of toilet paper as if it could be our last.

We’ve had a lot of family time together, and occasionally that’s felt like too much of a good thing. We decided that jointly creating a family-oriented website might be just the thing to raise our spirits, channel our energy and bring out the best in each of us. Our goal is to help other families who might be struggling to figure out their new normal by sharing activities that have brought us together.

We chose the name for this website with dual meanings. The pandemic has us on edge – grumpy, routines disrupted, with no clear sense for what the future holds. At the same time, we intend to respond with creativity, an unconventional perspective, and a fondness for absurd humor – in other words, our edge.

Sister on the Edge (SotE) is in 6th grade and has fun listening to and making music, acting, doing art, playing basketball, and hanging out with friends. Her ideal go-to day is mostly spent in her bed sleeping!

Brother on the Edge (BotE) is in 4th grade and enjoys building legos. He loves shiny and beautiful items including rubies, diamonds, sapphires, and unusual trinkets. He appreciates making and selling homemade gadgets. The hobby he treasures most is eating!

Mom on the Edge (MotE) is a study in contrasts: She loves to eat but is too impatient to cook. She is an extrovert but is sometimes disappointed with humanity. There is nothing more important to her than her family, but she also treasures her alone time. She is an emergency doctor, but she likes to avoid vomit. She adores reading but can be found laughing hysterically watching Arrested Development. Remember: There’s always money in the banana stand.

Since Dad on the Edge (DotE) fell goofy in love with MotE, his life keeps getting better. He was raised in a loud and loving immigrant family and has been trying to lower the volume ever since. He enjoys hiking, cycling and bodyboarding with the kids. He is a finance nerd, enjoys fiction, and when he’s not at home he works as an ER doctor.

We live in coastal California, where we try to balance tears, hurt feelings and tough days with love, forgiveness, and gratitude.
