Three Great Articles (for Adults) to Read When You’re on the Edge

1. Amid the Coronavirus Crisis, a Regimen for Reëntry – Dr. Atul Gawande cogently offers a safer, evidence-based approach to the resumption of life with COVID still omnipresent. I’ve read scores of articles – both medical and in the lay press – on the virus by now, but this one was particularly useful in helping me conceive of a means for safer reentry. Gawande reports on a 4-step approach adopted by Partners HealthCare that seems to be working.

2.How TikTok Holds our Attention – If you think TikTok is a goofy app backed by a well-oiled company with the simple goals of making money and offering entertainment, think again. This piece by Jia Tolentino touches not only on how the app is adversely affecting our culture (although she states facts and makes no grand statements), but also demonstrates links to persecution of the Uighurs, a Muslim minority, in China.

3.Your Professional Decline is Coming (Much) Sooner than you Think – I have a friend who refused to read this article by Arthur C. Brooks because the (misleading) title made my pal want to avoid what he thought was a depressing piece. But he was missing the point by not reading it – at least the last half. Yes, those of us in middle age are experiencing cognitive decline, but – instead of denying it – we can embrace a different type of intelligence (crystallized instead of fluid) and succeed in that realm. We also can transition to focus on what really leads to happiness like connection, spirituality, and service.

  1. I began my transition to Vanaprastha last year, though I didn’t have a word for it (though to some I’ve been calling it my mid-life reward). This great article helped give me comfort that I’m on the right track. Thank you!
